    Wine Racking Materials — Wood, Metal, and Acrylic Compared

    The racking system is the one decision inside the cellar that touches every bottle. It sets the density, dictates the airflow, and defines the visual character of the room. There is no universally correct material — only a correct material for a given collection, a given architecture, and a given climate.

    We are asked, more often than any other question at the start of a project, "what should the racking be made of?" The honest answer is that racking is the last decision, not the first. The collection dictates density; the room dictates airflow; the interior dictates register. Once those three are settled, the material chooses itself. What follows is the framework we use with clients when the question comes up early.

    What Each One Actually Does

    Wood Racking

    The traditional choice — warmth, silence, provenance.

    Wood remains the default for private cellars because it disappears into the room. Mahogany, sapele, and redwood are the workhorses; walnut and rift-sawn white oak are the current designer preferences. Wood absorbs and releases moisture at nearly the same rate as the cellar air, so it never sweats or condenses. It dampens vibration from cooling systems and creates no thermal bridge into the bottle. Density is moderate — a well-designed wood rack typically holds 12 to 18 bottles per square foot of wall.

    Strengths
    Silent, warm, endlessly customisable, ages gracefully.
    Trade-offs
    Lower density than metal. Sensitive to sustained humidity outside 55–70% RH. Cost scales sharply with species and joinery.
    Best For
    Traditional and transitional interiors; collectors who want the room to feel like a library.

    Metal Racking

    The density and airflow choice — engineered, minimal, structural.

    Powder-coated steel and machined aluminium have moved from restaurant back-of-house into serious residential cellars over the last decade. Metal racking uses far less material per bottle, which means dramatically better airflow around the glass — a real advantage in rooms where the cooling unit is fighting a summer load. Cable, peg, and label-forward systems can push density to 24+ bottles per square foot. The visual language is contemporary and often intentionally sculptural.

    Strengths
    Highest bottle density. Best airflow. Precise, repeatable engineering. Very long service life.
    Trade-offs
    Can transmit compressor vibration if not isolated. Cold to the touch — a thermal concern only in poorly insulated rooms. Contemporary aesthetic reads wrong in traditional interiors.
    Best For
    Modern architecture, high-capacity collections, glass-fronted display cellars.

    Acrylic & Glass Racking

    The display choice — the bottle itself becomes the material.

    Cast acrylic and structural glass racking systems present the collection as the visual object. There is almost no visible support hardware — bottles appear to float against the wall or within a lit vitrine. Airflow is essentially unrestricted. These systems are the most demanding to specify: the substrate wall must be dead-flat, the cooling strategy must account for radiant load through any glazed surface, and lighting must be tuned to avoid heat gain on labels. Density sits between wood and metal.

    Strengths
    Unmatched visual presentation. Excellent airflow. Reads as architecture rather than furniture.
    Trade-offs
    Highest cost per bottle. Least forgiving of substrate irregularities. Fingerprints and dust are visible. Rework is expensive.
    Best For
    Display cellars, glass-walled wine rooms, collections where curation is part of the interior.

    The Framework

    How to Choose

    Start with the collection, not the material. A working cellar of 800–1,500 bottles with regular acquisition and rotation almost always benefits from metal — density and airflow matter more than warmth. A curated cellar of 300–600 bottles held for aging, integrated into a traditional interior, is almost always better served in wood. A display cellar behind glass, where the collection is part of the architecture, is where acrylic and structural glass earn their cost.

    Hybrid rooms are common and often the right answer. Wood on the primary walls for aging, a metal or acrylic feature wall for large-format bottles and the current drinking window, is a configuration we specify frequently. The material choice should follow the way the collector actually uses the collection, not the other way around.
